Dear Mr. Lillevand:

You will, I am sure, remember that the University of California has sent,
under my direction, six botanical expeditions to western South America between
1935 and 1958.

The scientific importance of the plant collections made by these expeditions
has attracted world-wide attention. Many new plants or plant products of agri-
cultural, horticultural, medicinal and industrial significance were discovered.
By mapping plant distribution and recording climatic and other pertinent data,
previously unknown agricultural potentialities of Peru, Chile and Argentina
were brought to light. The governments of those republics have acknowledged
the importance to their economies of our accomplishments by presenting me with
decorations and scientific degrees.

In many published accounts of the scientific results of the six expeditions
attention has been called to the large share in our success attributable to the
generosity of Grace and Co. in, each time, transporting, gratis, our equipment
from and returning it and our collections to San Francisco. In reporting to
agencies of South American governments on the local importance of our results
I have uniformly referred to the assistance furnished by your organization.

During the 1951-52 and 1957-58 expeditions my collaborator was Mr. Paul C.
Hutchison, Senior Botanist at the University of California Botanical Garden.
He is a highly skilled scientist whose capacity and accomplishments are widely
recognized. A seventh expedition to South America is proposed for 1963-64. I
am not in a position personally to direct this new expedition and have assigned
the task to Mr. Hutchison. I am entirely confident that he will have great
success in this new project.

At my suggestion Mr. Hutchison will see you to discuss the possibility of
continuation of past cooperation by Grace and Co. In other words this letter
will serve as an introduction to you for Mr. Hutchison.

for your sustained and indispensable contributions to the success of our
South American botanical expeditions and with all good wishes,
