BOTANICAL EXPLORATIONS REALIZED IN PERU DURING THE LAST THIRTY YEARS.

The three last decades of the present century have seen intense scientific activity concerning the study of the flora of Peru. Numerous expeditions have traversed its territory accumulating materials for the systematic investigation, and the botanical institutions of the whole world are concentrating their attention on our country in such a way that it has no precedents in the past. It all predicts that, within a short time, the vegetation of the Peruvian Andes will be one of the best known of South America. With the brevity that a newspaper article demands, I am going to review rapidly the works effected from the close of the year 1906 up to the present time and the principal publications that have reached the public.

In 1906 Dr. Serafin Filomeno, Director of the College of "San Jose" of Moyobamba, obtains an appreciable collection of Orchideae in the reported province (B D) that contained 23 new species. It was studied by the eminent monographist, Dr. Rudolf Schlechter, who has presented the result of his studies in the notable work entitled "Die Archideenfloren der Sudamerikanischen Kordillerenstaraten --IV Peru" (Berlin, Dahlem, September 1, 1921).

In the same year Huber explores the department of Loreto, making a trip through Canchahuayo, Leche, Pampa de Sacramento and along the Huallaga River (M G, B D) and E. Kohler, inhabitant of the valley of Chanchamayo, herborizes in the valleys of La Merced and Huacapistana, devoting, preferably, attention to the Orchideae (B D).

In September of 1909, Prof. Augusto Weberbauer renews his work of herborization that he so successfully undertook between the years 1901 to 1905.
