Project title: Factors influencing plant distribution in temperate South America

Required Statements
1. Nature and purpose of project:
My total of 4 years botanical research in South America as Director of 5 University of California Botanical Garden Expeditions to the Andes has led to postulates concerning major factors responsible for the present day distribution of vegetation in the Andean area and adjacent portions of temperate South America.
Two postulates are related to the geologic history of South America:
(1) Elevated plateaus in Peru and adjacent Bolivia, east and west of the barrier to plant dispersal presented today by the crest of the Andes, were continuous before the last uplift of the Andean mountain chain and provided an avenue for ancient plant migration -- apparent similarities in the composition of the modern Peruvian and Bolivian subAndean floras point to this conclusion. (2) During the post-glacial retreat of the ancient floras of Chile southward to subantarctic Patagonia, individuals of certain plant species were left behind, strongly to influence the composition of present day floras of central and southern Chile -- discovery in south central Chile of relics of Patagonian species supports this postulate.
Additional postulates are: (1) TransAndean dispersal of modern floras is more effectively limited by the climatic conditions at high altitudes than has hitherto been appreciated -- what is known of the vegetation of the region in north eastern Chile at the point of juncture of Peru, Bolivia, Argentina and Chile supports this postulate. (2) Interaction of altitude and exposure is responsible for the unique types of interAndean plant distribution -- a postulate, hitherto undocumented, which can best be confirmed by study of the flora on the walls of the vast canyon of the Peruvian river Maranon from its source to the point where it has broken through the Andean barrier to become a part of the Amazonian river system.
These postulates are based upon preliminary evidence (plant collections and vegetation mapping) and further detailed research in the areas involved is essential to confirm them. This additional research will include intensive plant collecting and vegetation mapping in those botanically little known South American areas which should furnish critical evidence. To carry on this research in South America during 1957-58 and the aid of trained North and South American assistants will be required.
Following the assembling and return to Berkeley to fit plant collections and other evidence, at least one additional year (1958-59) will be spent in analyzing them and reporting upon their significance, with the aid of local assistance.
The cost of assistance, in South America and in Berkeley, transportation to, from and in South America, and a variety of collecting expenses are budgeted in the request for a grant-in-aid from the National Science Foundation.
2. The proposed research articulates with the Program for Systematic Biology of the National Science Foundation since it will clarify fundamental biological problems with which that Program is primarily concerned.
