SUMMARY
The Cape District, Baja California Sur, is an important geographic study area.
It contains a variety of xeric habitats in a tropical environment and includes elements of an insular tropical flora. Because of the information and the specimens accumulated from the region around 1900 and because of the region's accessibility and the insularity (which provides basic data for illuminating trends and rates of evolution) the area is particularly suited for study and for testing the hypothesis of relative and discriminatory robustness of tropical, arid assemblages of plant species. The area was subjected to some intensive qualitative biological work about 80 years ago which provides data on presence of species and botanical notes on their abundance such as are not commonly available for many tropical areas.
The hypothesis of relative robustness of this flora is a testable one and the results will bear on land-use practices not only locally but throughout much of the arid tropics today. The work is significant to the entire problem of the effects of land-use in the arid tropics of which much of the world's tropical areas consist. However, robustness is a relative term and the current plans of the Mexican government and of industry for development of this small tropical area may rapidly reduce the flora to one no longer having the present dramatic variability. Ecological methods of vegetation sampling will be employed at various permanently marked points within the district in order to help interpret current and future land-use practices and their effects on the species assemblage.
The proposed study is important to plant systematics as it will utilize the results of previous botanists' efforts which are available in herbarium specimens, making this more easily accessible, and will summarize this information as well as completing it with needed further selective collections. Knowledge of this flora with its low species to family ratio and its many endemics, can help to elucidate rates of evolution and provide biologists with additional baseline data on xeric, tropical biota.
