Basic food plants-
1. What are our interests?
Kinds of plants used
take a good American meal as an
example - Steak dinner - start
with an appetizer, then the potato salad
soup, entree, vegetables, drink,
desert - with ice.
What is provided - basically
Carbohydrates, proteins, fats.
Most food plants provide some of each
Carbohydrates (Cereals) -> carbohydrates
Sugars, starches,
-> side products - oils, proteins
Types of cereals -
1. Wheat - Triticum aestivum - many
2. Rice - Oryza sativa - etal.
3. Corn - Zea mays
4. Barley, Rye, Oats, Sorghum
Millets - several kinds
5. Buckwheat -
Other grasses of which - Sugarcane,
bamboo, forage
