SYLLABUS
1. Introductory Lectures (Professor J. G. Hawkes) 2 lectures
Aims and methods of the M.Sc. Course. General review of world studies in exploration, evaluation, utilization and conservation of plant genetic resources. International collaboration and co-ordination. The role of FAO and IBP. Establishment of national, regional and international germplasm banks. Training of personnel.
2. Origin of Cultivated Plants (Professor J. G. Hawkes) 26 lectures
22 three-hour practicals
Taxonomy, origins and evolution under domestication of cultivated plants. Historical review: de Candolle, Darwin and Vavilov. Methods of study; botanical, cytogenetical, biochemical, archaeological, linguistic and historical techniques. Role of wild and weed species in agricultural origins and subsequent evolutionary processes. Detailed studies: (1) Cereals (2) Roots and tubers (3) Sugar plants, (4) Protein sources (5) Oil plants (6) Vegetables (7) Fruits (8) Spices and condiments (9) Stimulants (10) Fibres (11) Ornamentals. General conclusions.
3. Taxonomic Methods (Dr. J. T. Williams and Dr. R. N. Lester) 21 lectures
Some practicals
Advanced considerations of concept of characters; relation to adaptation, acclimatisation and polymorphism. The conflict of categories. Morphological criteria; phenotypic plasticity. Anatomical criteria; advancement indices. Palynology; diversity of derived types, relation to phylogeny. Comparative embryology and taxonomy. Cytological characters. Numerical taxonomic methods. Nomenclature.
General principles of Biochemical Systematics. Secondary compounds as characters revealed by chromatography; validation of hybrids; taxonomic importance of biochemical pathways. DNA and proteins as molecules with high information potential. Analysis of proteins by electrophoretic and immuno-chemical methods, to yield taxonomic information.
4. Genecology (Dr. D. A. Wilkins) 15 lectures
Morphological and physiological variation within plant species. Adaptation to differences of climate and soil. Experimental study of adaptive differences. Clinal and ecotypic variation. Micro-evolution and natural selection
