Collections would be made on an area basis and along ecological principles, though on an agreed priority basis.
(ii) Maintenance
The collected material would be processed and all or part forwarded along with collection records and herbarium specimens to the Izmir Centre for long-term storage, final identification and documentation. The participating countries would each establish a small germplasm unit, preferably in the agency responsible for plant introduction.
(iii) Distribution
The combined seed collections would be available to all member countries and the international community on request.
Subsamples of seed collections would be prepared at Izmir for safe keeping in other gene banks. Simultaneously, the Izmir Centre would be recipient of subsamples from other regional centres.
(iv) Rejuvenation
For ecological and genetic reasons, it is essential that rejuvenation of seedstock be done on a regional basis. In order to maintain variability or prevent genetic change by selection in an environment to which the original samples were not adapted, they must be rejuvenated (i.e., grown again from seed) in the countries where they were collected and in an environment as close as possible to their original habitats.
(v) Evaluation
It is also desirable that evaluation programmes be carried out on a regional basis so that the genetic potential of the material can be studied satisfactorily under as widely varied environments as
