Taxonomy—mainly classification.) at first glance, it would seem that, whatever knowledge of the genetic basis of variation, chromosome structure and behavior would seem to be of greatest significance, it would seem to me to be most unscientific to rely on that type of evidence to the complete, or even partial exclusion, of other evidence. I think, when we know enough, we will see that genetic differences are accompanied by differences in morphology, physiology, and adaptation to environment. Where at present, these differences seem to be absent, I think the discrepancy can be traced to the incompleteness of our knowledge, and to the inadequacy of our techniques.
In support of my point of view, I might point to the fact that with the increase of our knowledge, many large groups of plants and animals have maintained their systematic position as first assigned them by very early systematists (who worked principally with structure).
