The karyotypic studies combined with the results of genome-analysis were used by Chumakov and Sushin in support of the reinstatement of the genus Arthrophyllum, Eremogyrum el Agropyron s.str., and we based our revised revision, in 1961, on the genus Leymus as distinct from Elymus on the observation that both its karyotypes are significantly distinct from both the karyotypes of any Elymus, in addition to morphological distinctions which Hochstetter (1898) had made his expert splitting in these genera that since had been ignored for over a century. As for other polyploid genera described by past taxonomists, it was found that homologous chromosome combinations characterize the genera and presently accepted by at least one taxonomist.
But felt that some additional morphological and hybridization evidence was needed before that step could be taken without some hesitation. That evidence has since become available so there seems to be only the classical resistance of our instinctive conservatism that may counter the acceptance of such a proposal, then through its relative general usefulness is only a matter of time and convenience.
