Dear Dr. Zipf:
In response to your inquiry of March 5, I believe it would
be impractical to attempt to list genera in the Biosystematic
Index --- certainly for the vascular plants, at least, the
family listing is adequate for most research workers. However,
you might wish to reexamine your listing of higher taxonomic
categories. For example, almost no one follows the older
"Pteridophyta-Spermatophyta" concepts today. It would be
preferable to list the major taxon Tracheophyta and under this
heading list the major classes: Psilophytopsida, Psilopsida,
Lycopsida, Pteropsida, etc. For your information I enclose
a mimeographed sheet of a modern classification of the vascular
plants (down to the family level).
With reference to section definitions for which I am responsible,
I offer the following comments:
Palynology---See my remarks in the 2nd paragraph of my
letter to you dated 11 Dec., 1968.
"Palynologic fossils" include a number of
microorganisms of animal origin or whose
exact affinities are unknown. These should
be included here, because they are recovered
along with plant spores and pollen assemblages
in ancient sediments and often have considerable
value in stratigraphic correlation. The
members of an organization to which I belong,
The American Association of Stratigraphic
Palynologists (AASP), are interested in all
kinds of palynologic fossils for purposes of
stratigraphic correlation; accordingly, they
are better served if the abstracts of these
varied microorganisms are grouped together
in the Palynology Section.
I would also recommend inclusion of morphologic studies of
extant spores and pollen which provide taxonomic and/or
phylogenetic information. This would include descriptions based
on both transmission electron microscopy and the newer scanning
electron microscopy, as well as the more conventional light
microscope investigations.
